Telephone and internet services continued to expand during 2015. The number of mobile telephone connections increased by 10.2 per cent, while fixed wireline telephone connections recorded a growth of 0.5 per cent in 2015. However, fixed wireless connections continued its declining trend, recording a drop of 7.2 per cent in 2015, causing a decline in total fixed telephone connections by 4.0 per cent during the year. By end 2015, fixed telephone penetration (connections per 100 persons) and mobile telephone penetration stood at 12.4 and 116.3, respectively. With regard to internet services, total internet connections grew by 20.5 per cent during 2015, raising internet penetration to 19.5. This was largely supported by the rapid growth of 22.2 per cent in mobile internet connections, while fixed internet connections grew by 12.6 per cent.

Total Number of landlines in use in Sri Lanka are 2,061,196 as of December 2015 & total number of mobile phones in use in Sri Lanka are 24,384,544 as of December 2015.

The latest trend is the Fixed 4G LTE technology, because of this technology many Sri Lankans who live in rural and remote areas can now access a good telephone and broadband internet service.
